And when I thought it was all done…
…here comes my tax return – which was negative 64 000 NOK (USD 10 000) 🙂 Because – despite all my researcher and all my form-filling and all the signatures and letters, there was ONE form I had missed – the one that would ACTUALLY give me tax exemption while I was in the US – a signed confirmation on an NTNU (University) form that stated precisely the dates for when I left and when I returned, signed by me and my Department head. This form was needed by the University Payroll services, preferably before the end of 2011, so that THEY in turn could ensure that the Tax Authorities…
Revise and Resubmit
I am now working on my 3rd “revise and resubmit” of 2012, which in my personal experience is pretty great – but wow – not all revise and resubmits are created equal! My first one this year was from Marine Policy, Norwegian aquaculture expansion and Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM): Simmering conflicts and competing claims, and only had minor changes, and is already published: http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0308597X12000401 The second one was for Ocean and Coastal Management, Regime formation at the agenda formation stage analyzed from a Futuristic plankton perspective, and had significantly more changes, but pretty clear cut ones that were understandable and straight forward – it did take some hours to fix…
Application for voluntary membership in the Norwegian Social Security System
NAV – Voluntary membership form Filled out – all I need is a signature now and I am all set for this part! Apparantly – according to the NAV utland person I spoke with: Sitat nedenfor er hentet fra http://www.nav.no/Internasjonalt/Arbeid+i+utlandet/Arbeidstaker+i+utlandet: Arbeid i USA, Canada, Quebec eller Australia Dersom du er arbeidstaker i USA, Canada, Quebec eller Australia, mottar lønn fra Norge og det betales arbeidsgiveravgift av lønnen din, og du skal være i USA eller Canada i mindre enn fem år eller i Australia eller Quebec i mindre enn tre år, blir du medlem i folketryden i Norge etter trygdeavtale med disse landene. Det anbefales likevel at dere søker om medlemskap i…
Deciding on a University!
After having been provided with a list of interdisciplinary research institutions in the US by DG Webster, the research into which of these were perfect for me started! I rapidly deleted some and end ended up with some favorites after a search – and the thin red line appeared to me – I wanted the West Coast of the US the most, and I would not mind spending a year in Halifax, Nova Scotia either! http://www.fish.washington.edu/ – well, why not – Seattle, Washington is pretty tempting… http://www.vims.edu/research/topics/index.php – I just did not want to go to Virginia – I am that simple… http://www.rsmas.miami.edu/ – Nothing about Miami tempted me… http://www.umaine.edu/marine/index.php…
Santa Barbara – imagine that!
After getting my PhD June 17th 2010 and being offered the position as Post Doc, I decided that I did not want to waste any more time – this time I would go live in the US for a year at whatever the cost! I first learned about the Berkeley program that our Department cooperated with in San Fransisco and I really had my heart set on going to San Fransisco for a year. I contacted several professors, but none replied. I also applied for an office space from our department, but was not awarded the spot to my big dismay. I was really getting worried.. In the end I…
