NAV and voluntary membership in the Norwegian Social Security System
First – this NAV page about membership in the Norwegian Social Security System while working abroad is pretty intersting: https://www.nav.no/no/Person/Flere+tema/Arbeid+og+opphold+i+utlandet/Jobbe+i+utlandet+og+folketrygden/utsendt-arbeidstaker-til-utlandet#chapter-1 During our trip to Texas, we will be mandatory members of the Norwegian Social Security System because we intend (apparantly very important) to be away for less than 12 months. Still – to ensure that we are insured, we will apply to be voluntary members – and in doing so, we have to fill in three forms to send to NAV You do this by going to this link: https://www.nav.no/no/Person/Skjemaer-for-privatpersoner/Skjemaer/Til+eller+fra+Norge+%28international%29/Opphold+eller+arbeid+utenfor+Norge Here – you choose the first option – “Jeg vil søke om medlemskap i folketrygden under opphold utenfor Norge” Then pick “Jeg…
Partner might not need extra permission to work from home!
If you recall this post: http://wanderingresearcher.com/2018/05/22/new-this-round-spouse-needs-approval-to-work-as-well/ – I talked about how your partner would need to get extra approval to work from home in the US, even if he/she does not receive any kind of salary in the US. One of the partners of a Fulbrighter has checked this and was informed that he/she did NOT need to apply. Therefore, you should check first! The following message on this “teleworking” issue was given us from the US embassy via Fulbright: It has always been our advice to recommend that applicants contact USCIS once in the United States regarding any questions they have about working or teleworking. USCIS has an instant chat…
Skatteetaten – updated tips from the origin
So – in searching my own blog and the internet to ensure that I get the correct information in place that will ensure that I get a tax reduction in Norway during my stay in the US – I found this text on a page – and it is approved by the Norwegian tax authorities: It says to: Send in the application for changed tax rate on form RF1102 (which I did not know – so this is new for me – your welcome) Add in a confirmation letter from your employer that has your: Employment information (full time? part time?) Income The project you will work on while in…
New this round – spouse needs approval to work as well
So – my husband is going to join us in Houston, Texas in December – choosing to stay home to work a bit longer on ongoing projects until then – but will work in Houston when he gets there – on projects that his work in Norway will still be paying him for. What he needs, however, is apparently permission to keep working in the US for his Norwegian company where he works now – even though he is still going to be paid by Norway, pay taxes to Norway and for all purposes, still be a Norwegian employee. Furhtermore, he is also going to be on the J2 visa…
Phuh – finally see the light at the end of the tunnel
Thank God for Fulbright. In all honesty, I really dont know how other people without the resources of Fulbright in the back are able to do this… The beautiful people of Fulbright have now filled in my DS 2019 – Certificate of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor Status (J-Non Immigrant), and given med “hold my hand” instructions on how to fill in the DS 160 (which I can not even remember having filled out last time around – but I surely must have – and have proof of when I searched my own website for DS 160). I can see that even then, I was confused about the photos – and…
Planning for visiting scholar years with family – where to go?
Despite the fact that we are going to the US for a year, and have before as well, there is nothing about this that is unplanned or that hasnt gone through enormous amounts of thoughts. In a couple of blogs posts, I want to go through some of the issues you will come across -and hopefully this will make it easier for you to make this choice as well. This first blog post is about the obvious question: where should you go? Do you have no idea? Or do you have a university in mind with scholars you have always wanted to work with – but no real contacts? Or…
What kind of home do we want?
Its not easy figuring out what kind of home we want – there are so many things to take into account – but we have now settled on what we prefer: *We have to live so that it is not too incovenient for either myself (commuting to Galveston) or my husband (commuting to the Energy Corridor) – this pretty much places us within the inner ring of the city – since he has to go straight west and I have to go south-east. *We want to live in an urban setting – as my 13 year old describes it – “Like they live in Friends” — for me that means…
And when I thought it was all done…
…here comes my tax return – which was negative 64 000 NOK (USD 10 000) 🙂 Because – despite all my researcher and all my form-filling and all the signatures and letters, there was ONE form I had missed – the one that would ACTUALLY give me tax exemption while I was in the US – a signed confirmation on an NTNU (University) form that stated precisely the dates for when I left and when I returned, signed by me and my Department head. This form was needed by the University Payroll services, preferably before the end of 2011, so that THEY in turn could ensure that the Tax Authorities…
My insides are in turmoil
Life if hectic nowadays… Arild left now – to take all our stuff that is going by boat to Los Angeles… the house is starting to look sterile and empty now… Anything that looks like us is gone – pictures, stuff, bedding, clothes – all packed. We are already living out of a suitcase – feels so strange. And my insides are in turmoil – I cannot relax at all – I feel jittery and nervous. Doesnt help that three of my interviewees are not being responsive to me so I wont get complete results from my Ventura workshop… On my to do list now is the following: 1) Get info…
NAV, HELFO og HSI – health insurance in a nutshell…
Or a very bizarre mix of acronyms that all are the same thing? Not completely sure – but that is what I am going to assume here… Let us do FOLKETRYGDELOVEN first! As mentioned – we are MANDATORY members of the Norwegian Social Security System because we INTEND (apparantly very important) to be away for less than 12 months but need to apply for VOLUNTARY MEMBERSHIP because of the lack of joint registers in NAV – http://researchermomonthemove.wordpress.com/2011/05/25/application-for-voluntary-membership-in-the-norwegian-social-security-system/ By being MANDATORY members AND because we are researchers that have been SENT ABROAD BY OUR NORWEGIAN EMPLOYER (the university – have to have sent N/USA 2 Attest om utsending av arbeidstaker fra…
